Feasibility Study and Conceptual Design Including Bankable Solar Resource Assessment Campaign for a 20 MW PV Power Plant in Hurghada, Egypt

The project aims to develop a technical feasibility study and conceptual design for 20 MW solar photovoltaic power station, to be located on the Egyptian Red Sea. The work entails conducting a bankable solar resource assessment campaign, including supply, installation, operation and maintenance of a solar meteo-station. The study is required by the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) to obtain financing from the Japan development agency, JICA. On the basis of the feasibility study, the AFD has granted financing and a tender for a contractor is expected to be launched.

Firnas Shuman has worked on this project with one of its international partners. Its scope of work included the provision of the following services:

Support to the development of an in-depth feasibility assessment and conceptual design for the project. This included basic design, capital and operating cost estimation, review of Egyptian laws, codes and practices relating to the project, identifying potential land use conflicts, site survey, grid impact assessment, cost of grid connection, and estimation of CO2 emissions reduction;
Conducting a solar resource measurement campaign, including the supply, installation, operation and maintenance of a solar meteo-station including tracking unit and shading apparatus to measure direct, diffuse, and global solar irradiation as well wind speed, direction, ambient temperature, humidity, pressure, temperature of solar modules, and impacts of soiling;
Constructing and operating the data collection and transmission system.
