The project extracts methane from the waters of Lake Kivu and uses the gas to generate electricity. The generated power is fed to the Rwandan grid operated by the Rwanda Electricity Group (REG). Phase 1 of the project, with capacity of 25 MW, started commercial operation in December 2015. The project was developed under a concession agreement made with the Government of Rwanda in 2009. The extraction of the estimated 60 billion cubic meters of methane gas trapped under Lake Kivu and converting that gas into electricity has not been done on a large commercial scale before.
