Following their introduction at wind fair and exhibition WindEnergy Hamburg in 2018 Firnas Shuman and ZX Lidars began cooperating and by 2019 Firnas Shuman were already operating a multi-unit fleet of ground-based “ZX 300” wind Lidars. Firnas Shuman has successfully completed several year-long LiDAR wind measurement campaigns in difficult climates.
Matthew Smith, Senior Sales Manager at ZX Lidars commented
ZX Lidars is extremely pleased to appoint Firnas Shuman as a Trusted Service Provider. Firnas Shuman have been thoroughly trained in the deployment of ZX Lidars technology and have a proven track record of delivering successful measurement campaigns in a range of environmental conditions. The team at Firnas Shuman are able to combine hands on experience, data analysis and practical deployment support in many countries. We are excited by this relationship and have total confidence in their ability to deploy our Lidars.
As a Trusted Service Provider, Firnas Shuman has already begun working on deploying several ZX 300 LiDAR units on projects in Central Asia and Caucasus for the first half of 2021 and the company sees a big potential in this cooperation to bring more Lidars for wind measurements in the regions where Firnas Shuman is active.
As Head of Resource Measurement at Firnas Shuman, Ahmed Salah, said:
We are proud to be cooperating with ZX Lidars as one of the pioneers in the field of Lidar wind measurement technologies and to bring our cooperation to the next level. ZX Lidars are constantly and successfully evolving their products and customer support services, investing in research and development. We have the confidence in the ZX units to offer their LiDAR systems to our customers.
What is LiDAR?
LiDAR – Light Detection And Ranging – is a method of measuring wind speed by illuminating small particles travelling in the air with a laser remotely from ground level up to several hundred meters above. The system operates by evaluating the frequency shift of the emitted laser beam caused by the Doppler effect between sent and received signals. By measuring in at least three different directions, wind speed and wind direction can be calculated. Although originally developed for use in a range of other industries, LiDAR for wind assessment started to be used as early as 2000 and wind Lidar OEM “ZX Lidars” were at the very heart of its inception.
The clear advantages of using LiDAR during wind measurement lay in their relative simplicity of installation and relocation when compared to traditional met masts. The ZX 300 onshore wind LiDAR device is fully classified according to IEC 61400-12-1:2017, accepted by DNV GL as a Stage 3 Bankable Lidar in simple terrain and is accepted by Deutsche WindGuard in complex terrain when using the ZX Complex Flow Solver tool. For projects in which wind measurements need to be performed in several locations or in which complex locations make the installation of masts difficult and costly, using LiDAR is highly beneficial.
Firnas Shuman provides consulting and technical services to those who plan, build, own, and operate power generation and infrastructure projects in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The company has been involved in over 10,000 MW of power generation capacity in over thirty-five countries. Firnas Shuman services are provided by one of the company’s three divisions: consulting for power projects, resource measurement, environmental and social compliance.
ZX Lidars provides industry-leading wind lidar products, ZX 300, ZX 300M and ZX TM for wind energy and meteorological applications. These Lidars deliver accurate wind measurements in both onshore and offshore applications at measurement heights / ranges across the full swept area of the blades of modern wind turbines, and beyond. With more than 10 million hours of operation in the field and over 7000 deployments (and counting), ZX Lidars has pioneered the use of Lidar in the wind industry. The company is proud of the many world firsts it has achieved with customers including: upwind measurements from a turbine nacelle, turbine wake studies, offshore deployments of both fixed and floating wind lidar, an industry-accepted validation process, re-financing and re-powering of a wind farm, successful demonstration of measurement accuracy in a wind tunnel and total wind project financing from a lidar without need for a met mast.
